Bring the Lord a song nobody has sung yet, Praise raised in the gathering of His people. Let Israel be glad in the One who made them; Let Zion's children delight in their King. Praise His name with dance and rhythm, With the timbrel and the harp. The Lord takes pleasure in His people And beautifies the meek with salvation. Let the saints rejoice in glory, Sing aloud upon their beds. Let God's high praises fill their voices, And a two-edged sword remain in hand. To execute the written judgment On the nations and their kings: This honor belongs to all His saints. Praise the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 149: The new song and the judgment written

Psalm 149 begins as congregational celebration and ends in judgment. Israel rejoices in its maker and king with a new song, dance, timbrel, and harp, while salvation is described as the adornment of the meek. The joy then extends to the bed and suddenly acquires a weapon: high praise is in the mouth and a two edged sword in the hand. The psalm does not mark that sword as a metaphor or dissolve the following violence into inward struggle. Nations are punished, rulers bound, and a judgment described as written is executed. At the same time, no specific campaign, date, or ruler is identified, so the severe scene should not be pinned to details the text does not supply. The final praise holds received salvation and participation in judgment inside the same difficult conclusion.
