Four Horns and Four Carpenters

Zechariah 1:18-21

Lyrics
[Vision Count] One horn rose where Judah bled, Two cast Israel far and wide, Three bent Jerusalem in dread, Four stood boasting in their pride. [Question] “What are these?” the prophet wondered, “What has scattered every head?” “They are powers that lifted terror, Till no exile dared be raised.” [Percussive Refrain] Four horns lifted, Four hands answered. Pride had numbered all its towers, Heaven numbered the dismantlers. [Verse] Then craftsmen came with measured footsteps, Not crowned as kings, not dressed for fame. Tools in hand and faces steady, Each was summoned to his name. [Chorus] Four horns and four carpenters, Power meets the end appointed. What cast Judah through the nations Will be shaken and disjointed. Four horns and four carpenters, No oppressor stands forever. God can raise the quiet worker To undo the proud together. [Break: Hammer Pattern] Strike the boast, not flesh for pleasure; Break the yoke, not truth or grace. Cast the terror from its high seat; Give the scattered room and place. [Final Chorus] Four horns and four carpenters, Every threat has been accounted. Those who scattered covenant people Find their own dominion grounded. Four horns and four carpenters, Simple tools beneath command. What looked fixed in iron arrogance Falls before an ordered hand. [Coda] The prophet counted twice: The powers, then their answer.

About the passage

Zechariah 1: A quiet world and an unanswered Jerusalem

Zechariah opens by making return a matter of allegiance before it becomes a matter of construction. The ancestors died, the prophets died, and the words they resisted still caught up with them. Then the night visions begin. Riders report an earth at rest, but Jerusalem remains afflicted, so global quiet is exposed as an incomplete peace. The answer to the angel’s “how long” arrives in rebuilding language: the house will rise, a measuring line will stretch over the city, and Zion will again be comforted. Finally, the powers that scattered Judah appear as horns and are met by corresponding craftsmen sent to cast them down. The chapter moves from remembered judgment to promised mercy without pretending the past did not happen, and it keeps asking what genuine restoration must include beyond simply returning to the land.
