The LORD Will Utterly Consume

Zephaniah 1:1-13

[Opening Oracle] The word came in Josiah's days, A sweep across the earth and ways. Man and beast, the birds, the fish, Stumbling blocks beneath the judgment's reach. [Verse I] Baal's remnant clings to roof and shrine, Starry hosts receive divided minds. Some swear by the LORD, then swear elsewhere, Some turn back and never seek in prayer. [Refrain] Hold thy peace before the Lord GOD, The day is prepared, the guests are called. [Verse II] Princes wear the foreign fashion, Servants leap across the threshold. Violence fills the master's houses, Deceit is stacked with silver and gold. [Chorus] The LORD will utterly consume the trust That hides in idols, wealth, and dust. From Fish Gate cry to Second Quarter, Hill to valley hears the slaughter. The LORD will utterly consume the lie That says the LORD will not draw nigh. With lamps the city will be searched, And settled hearts will be disturbed. [Merchant Break] Maktesh mourns, The traders fall. Silver-bearers Lose it all. [Verse III] Men sit thick upon their lees, Saying God does neither harm nor ease. Houses built will not be owned, Vineyards planted, wine unknown. [Final Chorus] The LORD will utterly consume the trust That hides in idols, wealth, and dust. No room of shadow, no guarded store, Can keep the searching light outside the door. The LORD will utterly consume the lie That heaven neither hears nor draws nigh. The lamps move on through every street, And false security loses its seat. [End] The city slept in confidence; The lamps were already lit.
