Miracle of Life

Psalm 139:13-16 · 1:32

Psalm 139 begins with the unsettling comfort of being completely known. Ordinary movements, unspoken words, distance, darkness, hidden formation, and the thoughts of God all expand the claim until no outside remains. The poem then turns sharply toward violent people and the speaker's declared hostility to those he identifies as God's enemies. That fierce turn is not the last word.

About the passage

Psalms 139: Known in every place, searched to the end

Psalm 139 begins with the unsettling comfort of being completely known. Ordinary movements, unspoken words, distance, darkness, hidden formation, and the thoughts of God all expand the claim until no outside remains. The poem then turns sharply toward violent people and the speaker's declared hostility to those he identifies as God's enemies. That fierce turn is not the last word. The closing petition brings the language of searching back upon the speaker himself. What the opening stated as fact becomes something he actively requests, including examination for any wicked way within him. The chapter therefore moves from being known, to discovering that no place escapes that knowledge, to asking that the same searching attention become guidance into the enduring way.
