[Verse 1] The Philistines fight Israel, and the Israelite army flees on Mount Gilboa. Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua are killed. Archers find the king and wound him. The armor bearer refuses because of great fear. [Pre-Chorus] The crown looked bright, the burden lay beneath, A throne could shelter life or summon grief. The next day the Philistines strip the dead upon Gilboa. Saul's head and armor are carried through Philistine territory as trophies. Jabesh-gilead hears what has been done to Saul. [Bridge] The bones are buried beneath an oak, and the city fasts seven days. The record declares that Saul died for transgression against God's word. His inquiry of a familiar spirit compounds the unfaithfulness. God kills Saul and turns the kingdom to David son of Jesse.
