[Verse 1]
No dew, no rain, the prophet told Ahab;
Then Cherith hid him beside a dry land.
Ravens brought bread in the morning and evening,
Water ran low at the word of command.
When the brook failed, the road turned to Zarephath;
A widow gathered two sticks by the gate.
One final meal for herself and her young son,
Then she expected to lie down and wait.
[Refrain]
The widow's last measure
Did not become her last bread.
The barrel kept yielding,
The oil did not fail as was said.
Day after day through the famine,
Enough met the need of the hour;
The widow's last measure
Rested beneath heaven's power.
[Verse 2]
Then sickness entered and silenced her child;
She held her guilt like a wound in the room.
Elijah carried the boy to his chamber,
Stretched himself over him, crying through gloom.
Three times he pleaded; the life came returning.
The child opened eyes where the mother had grieved.
[Final Refrain]
The widow's last measure,
The widow's lost son restored:
Now she knew truly the prophet
Spoke only the word of the Lord.
Flour and oil through the famine,
Breath where the body lay dead;
The widow's last measure
Became a house daily fed.
