Lyrics · 1 Samuel
No God Can Stand Before the Ark
1 Samuel 4:1-7:1
[Verse 1]
Israel camps at Ebenezer and loses four thousand men to the Philistines.
Hophni and Phinehas accompany the ark into the camp.
The Philistines fear Israel's God but strengthen themselves for battle.
A Benjaminite messenger runs from battle to Shiloh with torn clothes.
[Pre-Chorus]
The earth stood still beneath the weight of awe,
And every creature waited on the law.
[Chorus]
No God Can Stand Before the Ark, let the heavens hear the sound,
The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground.
The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail,
And every turning age would tell the tale.
[Verse 2]
Dagon is found fallen on his face before the ark.
The idol falls again with its head and hands severed on the threshold.
Ashdod is struck with tumors, and the terrified rulers move the ark.
Philistine priests advise returning the ark with a trespass offering.
[Bridge]
Golden tumors and mice are placed beside the ark as an offering.
The cows go directly toward Beth-shemesh while the Philistine lords follow.
Beth-shemesh rejoices, sacrifices the cows, and receives the ark.
Judgment falls for irreverent looking, and the ark is moved to Abinadab's house.
[Final Chorus]
No God Can Stand Before the Ark, let the heavens hear the sound,
The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground.
The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail,
And every turning age would guard the tale.
[Outro]
The thunder ceased, the answer still remained.
Creation bowed where sovereign wisdom reigned.
