Lyrics · 1 Samuel
Hidden Among the Baggage
1 Samuel 9:1-10:27
[Verse 1]
Kish stands as a Benjaminite of substance with a notably tall son named Saul.
Saul worries that his father will stop caring about the animals and fear for them.
Young women at the well direct them toward Samuel before the sacrifice.
Samuel sees Saul, and God identifies him as the appointed ruler.
[Pre-Chorus]
The crown looked bright, the burden lay beneath,
A throne could shelter life or summon grief.
[Chorus]
Hidden Among the Baggage, every crown is weighed,
Thrones are raised and royal vows are made.
A kingdom stands only where the word remains,
For pride can break what wisdom once sustains.
[Verse 2]
Samuel seats Saul at the chief place and gives him the reserved portion.
Samuel speaks privately with Saul on the housetop before dawn.
Samuel pours oil on Saul's head and declares God's anointing.
A company of prophets meets Saul, and the Spirit changes him into another man.
[Bridge]
Saul tells his uncle about the donkeys but conceals the matter of the kingdom.
Samuel gathers Israel at Mizpeh and rebukes the people for rejecting their Deliverer.
Benjamin, Matri, and Saul are selected, but Saul is found hiding among the baggage.
Saul stands above the people, the kingdom order is recorded.
[Final Chorus]
Hidden Among the Baggage, every crown is weighed,
Thrones are raised and royal vows are made.
A kingdom stands only where the word remains,
For pride can break what wisdom must sustain.
[Outro]
The crown passed on, the record kept the cost.
No throne could hold what disobedience lost.
