Bread, Sword, and the Cave

1 Samuel 21:1-22:23

[Verse 1] David reaches Nob alone, and Ahimelech trembles at his unexpected arrival. Ahimelech explains that only holy bread is available. Doeg the Edomite is present, detained before the LORD. David flees to Achish king of Gath. [Pre-Chorus] The road bent farther than the eye could know, Yet every camp was marked before they had to go. [Chorus] Bread, Sword, and the Cave, keep moving on the road, Through the wilderness beneath the heavy load. The hand of God marked every place and mile, And promise kept the weary rank and file. [Verse 2] Distressed, indebted, and discontented men gather under David. David places his parents under Moabite protection. The prophet Gad directs David to return to Judah. Doeg reports that Ahimelech supplied David with bread, counsel. [Bridge] Ahimelech defends David as Saul's faithful, honored servant. Saul condemns the priests, but his guards refuse to strike them. Doeg kills eighty-five priests and destroys Nob with the sword. Abiathar escapes to David, who accepts responsibility and promises protection. [Final Chorus] Bread, Sword, and the Cave, keep moving on the road, Through the wilderness beneath the heavy load. The hand of God marked every place and mile, And promise kept the weary through every trial. [Outro] Another camp, another stretch of land. The road moved on beneath the guiding hand.
