[Verse 1]
Samuel delayed, and the soldiers withdrew;
Saul took the offering he never should do.
Incense had barely gone up from the stone
When Samuel arrived and the fault became known.
The kingdom would not be established through him;
Impatience had entered and darkened the rim.
[Refrain]
To obey is better than sacrifice,
To hearken than fat of the ram.
Rebellion is stubborn as witchcraft and pride;
No offering can cover a willful command.
[Verse 2]
Amalek's judgment was spoken and clear,
But Saul spared Agag and the cattle held dear.
Bleating met Samuel before Saul could claim,
"I have performed every word in God's name."
The king blamed the people, then pleaded for face;
He feared public shame more than loss of God's grace.
[Bridge]
Samuel turned; Saul seized at his coat.
The fabric tore loose where the prophet had spoke:
"So is the kingdom rent out of thy hand,
Given to one who will answer command."
[Final Refrain]
To obey is better than sacrifice,
No altar can purchase the right
To edit the word while appearing devout,
Or spare what God judged in His sight.
Samuel mourned him, but Saul's crown grew dim;
The Lord sought a heart more faithful than him.
