The LORD Is My Rock

2 Samuel 21:1-22:51

[Verse 1] A three-year famine leads David to inquire of the LORD. David asks the Gibeonites what satisfaction will bless the inheritance. David spares Jonathan's son Mephibosheth because of covenant oath. Rizpah guards the bodies from birds and beasts through the season. [Pre-Chorus] The earth stood still beneath the weight of awe, And every creature waited on the law. [Chorus] The LORD Is My Rock, let the heavens hear the sound, The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground. The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail, And every turning age would tell the tale. [Verse 2] Ishbibenob attempts to kill David with a new sword. Abishai rescues David, and the men forbid the king from further battle. Sibbechai kills Saph in another conflict with the giants. Jonathan kills the six-fingered giant who defies Israel. [Bridge] He names the LORD his rock, fortress, shield, refuge. The song depicts divine descent through darkness, fire, thunder, wind. David praises God's perfect way, enabling strength, pursuit. The king closes by exalting the living God and covenant mercy to David and his seed. [Final Chorus] The LORD Is My Rock, let the heavens hear the sound, The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground. The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail, And every turning age would guard the tale. [Outro] The thunder ceased, the answer still remained. Creation bowed where sovereign wisdom reigned.
