[Verse 1]
Morning on the city and the gold is on the hill,
A hundred and twenty waiting in a room gone still.
Nobody says a word, there is nothing left to say,
Just the ordinary light of an ordinary day.
[Verse 2]
Then a roar with no wind in it came rolling through the beams,
And the dust fell from the rafters in a hundred silver seams.
The fire came apart in the air and would not stay one flame -
It came down on us one by one and called us each by name.
[Pre-Chorus]
I opened up my mouth and I did not know the sound,
But a man down in the street below - he knew it, and he turned around.
[Chorus]
Every tongue! Every tongue!
One word going out to every one!
Nobody left standing on the outside of it now -
Every tongue, and the day has just begun!
[Verse 3]
The sound came down the staircase and it spilled into the street,
And the whole city turned around on a hundred thousand feet.
From Parthia and Media, from Elam and the sand,
From Egypt, Rome and Crete - and every man heard his own land.
[Pre-Chorus]
He never learned a word of it, he never crossed that line,
But he's hearing his own mother in a language that was mine.
[Chorus]
Every tongue! Every tongue!
One word going out to every one!
Nobody left standing on the outside of it now -
Every tongue, and the day has just begun!
[Verse 4]
Some of them were laughing, said these men are full of wine.
Then a fisherman stood up with eleven in a line.
He said it isn't even nine, and no man here is drunk -
This is what the prophet swore was coming, and it's come.
[Bridge]
Your sons are going to speak, your daughters will as well,
The old will dream, the young will see it and they'll tell.
The sun will go down dark, the moon run red as wine -
And whoever calls that Name is answered every time.
[Chorus]
Every tongue! Every tongue!
One word going out to every one!
Nobody left standing on the outside of it now -
Every tongue, and the day has just begun!
[Verse 5]
Three thousand went down the hill before the day was old,
Down the great white staircase where the morning water rolled.
They went under in the stone pools and came up in the sun,
And the strangers of the morning came up brothers, every one.
[Outro]
House to house and hand to hand, the bread went round the ring,
An Egyptian and a Parthian, a child and everything.
Every tongue, every tongue -
One table, and the day had just begun.
Every tongue, every tongue -
One table, and the day had just begun.
