[Opening Build] One accord in one place. Morning of the feast. Suddenly a rushing wind Filled the house from west to east. Cloven tongues like living flame Rested over every head. The Holy Ghost filled every witness; Languages awakened when they spoke. [Chorus] Tongues of fire, Every nation heard its own. Tongues of fire, Heaven's mighty works made known. Parthian, Mede, and Roman, Arab, Cretan, near and far: Tongues of fire Turned one upper room into a world-spanning spark. [Verse 2] Some mocked and called them drunken; Peter stood with the eleven: "This fulfills the prophet's promise, Spirit poured from highest heaven." He preached the crucified and risen, David's Son exalted high. The hearers felt the word cut through them: "What shall we do?" became their cry. [Refrain] Repent and be baptized. Receive the promised gift. The word belongs to children And to all whom God shall call. [Final Chorus] Three thousand souls received the saying, Bread was broken, prayers arose. Teaching, fellowship, shared provision, Grace in every house and road. Tongues of fire, A people born beneath one Lord; Day by day the church was added Through the Spirit and the word.

About the passage

Acts 2: The risen Jesus pours out the promised Spirit

Pentecost makes the promised Spirit publicly audible in languages the gathered hearers recognize, and the first reactions already divide between wonder, questions, and mockery. Peter refuses to leave the event unexplained. Joel gives him language for the outpouring, while the Psalms let him argue that David's words reach beyond David's own occupied grave to the risen and exalted Jesus. The sound in Jerusalem is tied to authority in heaven: the Jesus who was crucified is proclaimed as Lord and Christ and as the one who has poured out what the crowd can see and hear. The hearers' question, “what shall we do?”, moves the chapter from interpretation to response. Repentance, baptism, forgiveness, and the gift of the Holy Ghost are joined to a promise extending beyond the immediate crowd. The chapter then turns three thousand additions into a daily life of teaching, fellowship, meals, prayer, generosity, and continuing need.
