[Raised] If then ye be risen with Christ from the grave, Seek what is above where the true King is placed. Set your affection beyond earthly rule, For life is now hidden with Christ in God. [Put Off] Mortify lust and covetous gain, Put anger, wrath, malice, and filthy speech away. Lie not to one another; the old man is gone, A new self is renewed in the image of One. [Chorus] Set your affection on things above, Put on compassion, kindness, and love. Meekness and patience, forgiving as Christ, And charity binding the whole into life. Set your affection on things above, Let the peace of God rule and make one body thankful. [Verse II] No Greek and no Jew, no bond and no free, But Christ is all and in all who believe. Let His word dwell richly in wisdom and song, Do all in His name with thanksgiving to God. [Household Movement] Wives and husbands, children and fathers, Servants and masters all stand under heaven. Whatever the labor, work heartily still, As serving the Lord and not merely men. [Final Chorus] Set your affection on things above, The hidden life will be shown with the Lord. Put off the old, put on mercy and love, And let every deed carry Jesus' name. [Outro] The heavenly mind Changed the work of ordinary hands.

About the passage

Colossians 3: The life hidden with Christ becomes visible in a household

Colossians 3 takes the death and resurrection language of chapter 2 and asks what such a life looks like when it becomes visible. The believers’ life is hidden with Christ in God and will appear with him in glory, but seeking the things above quickly reaches earthly conduct. The old life is stripped off through the rejection of disordered desire, covetousness, anger, malice, lying, and corrupt speech. The new life is being renewed after the Creator’s image in a community where inherited divisions cannot occupy Christ’s place. Compassion, humility, patience, forgiveness, love, peace, thanksgiving, teaching, and song become the clothing of that community. The chapter then enters the household. Wives, husbands, children, fathers, and enslaved people are addressed directly, with authority and obedience placed under “the Lord.” The section on slavery does not erase the institution, but it gives those without earthly inheritance a promised inheritance from Christ and places every wrongdoer under judgment without partiality.
