[Verse 1]
A tree rose broad in the center of earth,
Height unto heaven, abundant in worth.
Beasts found shadow and birds filled the bough;
Nations ate fruit from its greatness somehow.
Then a watcher descended with sentence and chain:
Cut down the tree, leave the stump in the rain.
[Warning Refrain]
Break off thy sins by righteousness.
Show mercy to the poor.
Perhaps the lengthening of peace
May hold the judgment's door.
[Verse 2]
Twelve months later the king crossed his palace:
"Is not this Babylon built by my might,
For royal honor, by power and splendor?"
The word had not ended before came the night.
The kingdom departed; his mind left the throne.
Driven from men, he was wet with the dew.
[Chorus]
The king ate grass with the beasts of the field;
Hair grew like eagles, and nails would not yield.
Seven times passed till he lifted his eyes;
Reason returned when he honored the Highest.
The king ate grass, and the proud heart learned:
Heaven rules kingdoms, and crowns are returned.
[Final Verse]
Nebuchadnezzar praised truth, judgment, and glory;
His honor came back and his counselors near.
Those who walk proudly can surely be humbled;
The king ate grass till the lesson stood clear.
