[Question Hook]
What is it, lying white on the ground?
What is it, waiting when morning comes round?
Fine as the frost and sweet on the tongue,
Bread from heaven for old and young.
[Verse 1]
The people remembered the flesh pots and bread,
Forgot all the chains and the labor they fled.
Hunger made Egypt look generous and near;
Murmuring rose in the wilderness air.
At evening the quail covered camp like a cloud;
At dawn came the small thing that puzzled the crowd.
[Refrain]
Gather enough for the need of the day,
No hoarding tomorrow, no storing away.
Double before Sabbath, then cease from the field;
Daily dependence is daily revealed.
[Verse 2]
Some kept it over; it bred worms and stank.
Some sought on Sabbath and found the ground blank.
An omer was guarded for children to learn:
Forty years bread till the land would return.
Then Rephidim waited with no water near;
The people contended and sharpened their fear.
[Rock Refrain]
Strike the rock before elders who see;
Water will answer and run for the thirsty.
Massah and Meribah carried the blame:
"Is the Lord among us?" they tested His name.
[Final Hook]
Bread from heaven, water from stone,
A wilderness table where nothing had grown.
Need after need, and day after day,
The Lord fed His people along the hard way.
