[Opening Plea]
If Thy presence go not with us,
Do not lead us from this place.
What could mark a chosen people
But the nearness of Thy grace?
Moses stood beyond the campfire,
At the tent where mercy spoke;
Cloud descended at the doorway,
Hope remained though vows had broke.
[Refrain]
Show me Thy glory,
Let goodness pass near.
Hide me within the cleft of the rock
When holiness draws here.
No mortal face may bear it,
No human strength endure;
Yet mercy walks before Him,
Compassion strong and pure.
[Verse 2]
Two new tables rose at morning,
Cut like those cast down before.
Moses climbed again to Sinai,
Forty days before the Lord.
There the sacred name was sounded:
Gracious, patient, rich in truth,
Keeping mercy through the ages,
Judging sin from root to fruit.
[Bridge]
He pleaded for a stiff-necked nation,
Asked that God would journey still.
Covenant was made and written,
Law renewed by holy will.
[Final Refrain]
Show me Thy glory,
Let goodness pass near.
The mountain held the intercessor;
The people waited in fear.
He came with shining countenance,
The tablets in his hand;
Mercy had renewed the promise
For the people in the sand.
