[Litany - First Signs]
The river ran blood and the fish rose dead;
Frogs climbed the ovens and covered the bed.
Dust became lice on the beast and the man;
Swarms filled the houses throughout the land.
Yet Goshen stood marked while the judgments increased,
And Pharaoh hardened when each terror ceased.
[Refrain]
Sign upon sign, the proud heart said no;
Warning upon warning: let the people go.
Egypt's gods trembled, the daylight grew thin;
Mercy kept knocking, but pride barred it in.
[Litany - Middle Signs]
Cattle fell stricken in field and in stall;
Ash became boils on the great and the small.
Hail mixed with fire beat barley and tree,
Though those who feared warning brought servants to safety.
Pharaoh confessed, then withdrew what he said;
The storm passed over, rebellion returned.
[Break - Locust and Dark]
Locusts consumed what the hail had not slain,
Covered the country like black moving rain.
Then darkness stood thick for three days over all;
Israel had light in the place of their call.
[Final Refrain]
Sign upon sign, the proud heart said no;
Warning upon warning: let the people go.
The last word was coming, more grievous than all;
A midnight would answer the king's hardened wall.
Sign upon sign, the choice had been shown;
No throne can withstand the Lord alone.
