[Verse 1]
Night spread over the terebinth plain,
Years had gathered, but no child came.
Abram carried a promise delayed,
A house full of servants, a hope growing frayed.
Then came the word: "Do not be afraid."
No borrowed heir would complete what was made.
[Refrain]
Count the stars if they can be told,
Silver on black in the midnight cold.
So shall the seed of the faithful be;
He believed, and it counted for righteousness freely.
[Verse 2]
He brought the heifer, the goat, and the ram,
The dove and the pigeon as ordered by God.
Pieces lay open; the daylight withdrew;
Birds circled downward, and Abram drove through.
A horror of darkness, a sleep deep and long,
A word of affliction, deliverance strong.
[Instrumental Space]
From river of Egypt to Euphrates' side,
The land stood promised though years would divide.
[Final Refrain]
Count the stars if they can be told,
Promise burns brighter when bodies grow old.
A smoking furnace, a lamp of fire,
Passed through the pieces and sealed desire.
Count the stars; let the dark testify:
The covenant lives though the answer waits nigh.
