[Verse 1] Night spread over the terebinth plain, Years had gathered, but no child came. Abram carried a promise delayed, A house full of servants, a hope growing frayed. Then came the word: "Do not be afraid." No borrowed heir would complete what was made. [Refrain] Count the stars if they can be told, Silver on black in the midnight cold. So shall the seed of the faithful be; He believed, and it counted for righteousness freely. [Verse 2] He brought the heifer, the goat, and the ram, The dove and the pigeon as ordered by God. Pieces lay open; the daylight withdrew; Birds circled downward, and Abram drove through. A horror of darkness, a sleep deep and long, A word of affliction, deliverance strong.
