[Verse 1]
Two brothers brought what their labor had grown,
One from the field and one from the fold.
Abel brought firstlings, the best of his own;
Cain watched favor and anger took hold.
His face sank downward, his spirit went hard,
Sin crouched close like a beast at the yard.
[One-Line Refrain]
The blood cries from the ground.
[Verse 2]
Out in the field where no witness stood,
Brother rose against brother in blood.
The question came, and the answer was cold:
"Am I his keeper?" the guilty one told.
But earth had opened and swallowed the stain;
The soil knew Abel and spoke of his pain.
[One-Line Refrain]
The blood cries from the ground.
[Bridge]
No harvest would answer the murderer's hand,
A fugitive wandering over the land.
Yet judgment stopped vengeance from striking him dead;
A mark bore warning wherever he fled.
[Final Refrain]
The blood cries from the ground,
Not lost, not silent, not covered or drowned.
A brother was taken, a family was torn;
The east received him, restless and worn.
The blood cries from the ground.
