[Strophic Verse 1]
Sold to a captain in Pharaoh's command,
Joseph found favor in all of his hand.
Household and field under blessing increased;
Trust grew around him, but temptation did not cease.
She seized at his garment; he fled from the room,
Left cloth in her fingers and walked into doom.
[Compact Refrain]
The prisoner still dreamed,
Though the iron door closed.
The Lord was with Joseph
Where no daylight showed.
[Strophic Verse 2]
False words accused him, the master grew hot,
Joseph was numbered with men long forgot.
Yet even in prison the keeper could see
Wisdom and faithfulness shaping the keys.
All of the labor was placed in his care;
The pit had changed walls, but God met him there.
[Dream Verse]
A cupbearer saw a vine filling fast,
Three branches ripening, the sorrow would pass.
A baker saw baskets and birds at the bread;
Three days would lift one and uncover one dead.
The meanings proved true at the feast of the king,
But the freed man remembered not Joseph's one thing.
[Final Refrain]
The prisoner still dreamed,
Though forgotten by men.
The Lord was with Joseph;
The hour would come when
The door would swing open,
The hidden be seen;
The prisoner waited,
And the prisoner still dreamed.
