About the passage
Jeremiah 25: The cup reaches the hand that conquered
Jeremiah 25 looks back over twenty-three years of rejected warning and then widens Judah's crisis into an international reckoning. Jeremiah dates the speech to Jehoiakim's fourth year and recalls persistent prophetic sending met by persistent refusal to hear. Babylon is named as the instrument of judgment, and Nebuchadnezzar is called God's servant for that appointed work. Yet Babylon's authority is immediately given a limit. Seventy years of domination do not become permanent ownership, and the empire that conquers others will itself answer for its iniquity. The cup of fury then passes from Jerusalem through an expanding list of nations until Babylon itself receives it. Roaring, a winepress shout, whirlwind, unburied dead, and the cries of shepherds give the judgment sound, motion, and scale. The chapter begins with the long patience of messages repeatedly sent. It ends with rulers and nations unable to escape the consequences those messages announced, while the conquering power is denied any exemption from the same accounting.
