Joshua
[Verse 1] Two men entered Jericho When evening touched the gate. A woman named Rahab received them Before the hour grew late. The king sent men to seek them; She hid them under flax, Then turned the search toward Jordan And sent the soldiers back. [Refrain] A cord of scarlet in the window, A promise in the wall, A household waiting under mercy When Jericho would fall. A cord of scarlet in the window, Bright against the night; Faith tied hope above the doorway Before the battle's light. [Verse 2] "We heard what happened at the sea, How kingdoms lost their breath. Your God is God in heaven above And earth beneath," she said. She asked that father, mother, And kindred all be spared; The spies required the scarlet sign And secrecy she shared. [Bridge] She lowered them down by a rope, For her house stood on the wall. Three days they hid among the hills Till searchers heard no call. [Final Refrain] A cord of scarlet in the window, Not silver, sword, or fame, Marked the room where trust had entered Before the conquerors came. A foreign woman chose the Lord, And mercy heard her call; A cord of scarlet in the window Would outlive Jericho's wall.

About the passage

Joshua 2: The woman inside Jericho who knows what is coming

Two unnamed spies enter Jericho, but Rahab becomes the chapter's central figure. She hides them when the king's agents arrive, redirects the search, and then supplies the intelligence that matters most. Jericho has heard of the Red Sea and the defeats of Sihon and Og, and fear has already hollowed out the city's confidence. Rahab interprets those events by confessing that Israel's God rules heaven and earth, then asks protection for her entire household. The escape through her wall-window becomes the place where a carefully defined oath is marked by a scarlet line. When the spies finally return to Joshua, they do not bring back a technical survey of Jericho's defences. Their conclusion largely echoes Rahab: the LORD has given the land, and its inhabitants are fainting. The woman inside the threatened city has effectively written the scouts' most important report.
