Lord, Teach Us to Pray
Luke · Lowercase Chamber Folk
[Verse 1 - unaccompanied prayer]
Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done
In earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
Forgive our sins as we forgive.
Lead us not into temptation;
Deliver us from evil.
[Refrain - three petitions]
Ask, and it shall be given.
Seek, and ye shall find.
Knock, and it shall be opened.
[Verse 2 - midnight steps]
At midnight a friend stood outside a shut door:
Lend me three loaves; a traveler has come.
Children were sleeping; the house was closed,
Yet importunity brought bread enough.
[Refrain - firmer return]
Ask, and it shall be given.
Seek, and ye shall find.
Knock, and it shall be opened.
[Bridge - father and child]
Will a father answer bread with a stone,
A fish with a serpent, an egg with a scorpion?
Even flawed hands know how to give good gifts.
How much more the Father in heaven.
[Outro - close promise]
Lord, teach us to pray and keep asking.
The heavenly Father gives the Holy Spirit
To them that ask Him.
