Thy Sins Are Forgiven Thee

Luke · Chanson Réaliste

[Verse 1 - sparse petition] Full of leprosy, face to the ground: Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean. He did not draw His hand away. I will. Be thou clean. [Refrain - brief and tender] The touch crossed the distance, The sickness left at once. Go, show thyself; bear witness. Mercy had spoken and the flesh was clean. [Verse 2 - crowded movement] Another man came carried on a bed, Four hands searching for a door through the crowd. They climbed with his weight to the housetop, Opened the tiles and lowered him before Jesus. [Breakdown - clipped questions] He saw their faith: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. Who can forgive but God alone? What reason ye within your hearts? [Bridge - rising command] Which is easier: forgiveness spoken, Or rise, take up thy couch, and walk? That ye may know the Son of man has power on earth: Arise. Take up thy couch. Go home. [Outro - released steps] He stood before them immediately, Carried what had carried him, And crossed his own threshold glorifying God. Strange things today; fear and praise in one room.
