[Verse 1] A lawyer stood to test the Teacher: "What shall inherit endless life?" The law replied with love of God And neighbor beyond strife. "Who is my neighbor?" came the question, Seeking borders safe and small. The answer took a road from Zion Where a wounded traveler fell. [Story Refrain] Robbers stripped him, Struck and fled. Left him half alive for dead. A priest came down and crossed aside. A Levite saw and passed him wide. [Verse 2] Then a Samaritan journeyed, Saw and felt compassion rise. Oil and wine met open wounds; His beast became the victim's ride. At the inn he watched beside him, Paid two pence and pledged the rest. Mercy crossed inherited hatred And made the stranger blessed. [Question Chorus] Who was neighbor to the fallen? Not the one with name or claim, But the one who showed him mercy When religion passed the pain. Who was neighbor? Go and do likewise. Love is measured on the roadside, Not by words that sound precise. [Coda] The question sought a limit. The story broke the wall. Neighbor is the one who bends Beside the wounded when they fall.
