[Verse 1]
Forty days He showed Himself living,
Spoke of the kingdom, broke their fear.
He charged them not to leave Jerusalem
Till the Father's promise drew near.
They asked if Israel's throne was ready,
If the kingdom would restore.
Times and seasons stayed with heaven;
Another task stood at the door.
[Refrain]
Power shall come upon you.
Witness shall cross the land:
Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,
To earth's remotest strand.
Power shall come upon you.
Wait till the Spirit is given.
Then carry the risen testimony
From city to nation.
[Verse 2]
At Bethany He blessed them;
A cloud received Him from sight.
They stared where heaven had taken Him,
Two men stood clothed in white:
"Why stand ye gazing upward?
The same One taken away
Shall come again in like manner
As seen departing today."
[Chorus]
Why stand ye gazing?
The road lies under your feet.
Why stand ye gazing?
The promise and mission meet.
They returned with joy to Jerusalem,
Continued in prayer and praise.
The ascended King was hidden,
But witness awaited days.
[Final Refrain]
Why stand ye gazing?
Wait, then go.
Heaven holds the King;
Earth must hear and know.
