[Verse 1] Bethany held a supper Six days before the feast. Lazarus sat among them; Martha served the least. Mary broke the alabaster, Poured the costly perfume down. Spikenard filled the whole house While love ignored the frown. [Refrain] The fragrance and the silver, Two measures of the heart: One poured out what she treasured, One priced where he would part. The fragrance filled the chamber; The silver crossed a hand. Love prepared Him for burial; Betrayal made its plan. [Verse 2] "Why was this not sold for poor men?" The objection sounded wise. Yet Judas kept the common purse, And theft lived underneath disguise. She had done what she was able, Anointed body for the grave; Where the good news crossed the nations, Her act would speak of love that gave. [Bridge] Outside, rulers sought a secret Way to seize Him without riot. Judas entered asking payment; Thirty silver pieces bought it. [Final Refrain] The fragrance and the silver, One rose, one clinked and fell. One became a lasting memorial, One opened darkness well. Bethany kept both choices Before the Passion started: One heart poured out devotion, One bargain left departed.
