Matthew
[Verse 1] He sent the twelve across before Him, Then withdrew alone to pray. Night found the boat in contrary weather, Far from shore before the day. In the fourth watch through the darkness A figure crossed the restless foam. They cried out, thinking it a spirit; Courage answered through the storm. [Refrain] Upon the water, The waves became a road. Upon the water, No depth could bear a load Too great for the One approaching, Whom wind and sea had known. Upon the water, He came toward His own. [Verse 2] Peter called for leave to meet Him, Stepped beyond the wooden side. For a moment faith walked forward, Then saw wind and feared the tide. He began to sink and shouted; A hand caught him from the sea. "Wherefore didst thou doubt?" was spoken, Then they entered quietly. [Chorus] Upon the water, The wind fell when He came aboard. Those within the boat bowed low And confessed Him as God's Son. Upon the water, Fear had watched the impossible; Yet the One who crossed the deep Made faith look up from what was visible. [Final Refrain] The shore drew near. The night released. Upon the water Walked the Prince of Peace.

About the passage

Matthew 14: Two tables, a storm, and an outstretched hand

The Book of Matthew sets two very different gatherings beside each other. Herod’s birthday feast becomes the setting for John the Baptist’s death, with a ruler allowing his public oath and the watching guests to govern what he does. Jesus then meets a hungry multitude in a deserted place and refuses to send them away, drawing the disciples into distributing food that begins with only five loaves and two fishes and ends with twelve baskets left over. On the sea, the disciples first mistake Jesus for a threat. Peter then moves from boldness to fear, but the rescuing hand reaches him before the rebuke about little faith is finished. The wind ceases, worship follows, and the chapter closes at Gennesaret, where recognition spreads through the countryside and the sick are brought to Jesus. Execution, provision, fear, rescue, and healing all turn on what people do when power stands before them.
