The Heads of Jacob

Micah 3:1-12

[Cold Open] Hear now, heads of Jacob, Should you not know what is right? You hate the good and love the evil, You turn the noon to night. [Accusation I] The people are treated like meat for a feast, Their labor consumed by the great and the least. Then rulers cry out when the reckoning starts, But heaven is silent to violence of hearts. [Response] No peace for a price, No truth sold by weight. The mouth that is fed calls tomorrow secure, The mouth left unfed declares war at the gate. [Chorus] The heads of Jacob have bent what was straight, Judgment is bartered and mercy must wait. Priests teach for reward, prophets answer for gold, Yet they lean on the LORD as though he can be sold. The heads of Jacob have darkened the land, But the Spirit gives truth an unpurchased command. [Verse II] Night falls on the seers, no vision appears, The sun sets early on profitable fears. The diviners cover their lips in disgrace, No answer from God can be bought in that place. [Declaration] But Micah is filled with power to declare The sin of the city no court wished to hear. Not rage for its pleasure, not thunder for show, But judgment and courage that covenant may know. [Bridge] Zion is built with blood in the stone, Jerusalem raised on the poor overthrown. The temple is used as a shield for the lie: “No evil can reach us; the LORD is nearby.” [Final Chorus] The heads of Jacob have bent what was straight, Judgment is bartered and mercy must wait. Because of their hands Zion turns to a field, Jerusalem heaps where the proud would not yield. The mountain of worship grows wild as a height, And bought voices vanish in unanswering night. [End] A plow through the city, A forest where holy walls stood.
