Obadiah (The Pride of Edom Falls)

Obadiah 1:1–21

Lyrics
The Book of Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament, but its warning is heavy. Pride cannot hide from the Lord. In the cliffs they made their throne Stone above the valley, they said Who can bring us down with no fear in their eyes But the Lord saw every hidden thing Every boast, every violence Every brother left to bleed Under Edom's silent sky They stood aside When the city burned They watched the gates fall open And never turn Though they build their nest among the stars He will bring them down Though they climb where eagles are He will bring them down Pride may rise on mountain stone But he cannot keep the crown As they have done, it shall be done He will bring them down They should not have rejoiced that day when Judah drank the sorrow They should not have spoken proud when Jerusalem was torn They should not have entered in to take what grief had broken They should not have handed over those who ran before the storm For the day of the Lord draws near upon every nation And every seed of violence will meet its own repayment Though they build their nest among the stars He will bring them down Though they climb where eagles are He will bring them down Pride may rise on mountain stone But it cannot keep the crown As they have done, it shall be done He will bring them down But on Mount Zion there shall be Deliverance and fire The house of Jacob will return From ashes to desire The stolen fields will bloom again The scattered ones come home And every throne of arrogance Will answer to his own Though they build their nest among the stars He will bring them down Though they climb where eagles are He will bring them down But Zion shall be holy and mercy shall be found The kingdom shall be the Lord's when every pride comes down The mountain of the proud will fall The wounded shall be restored And after every nation shakes The kingdom is the Lord's

About the passage

Obadiah 1: The brother at the crossroads

Obadiah begins with Edom high in the rocks and certain that no one can bring it down, then steadily removes every support beneath that confidence. Hidden wealth is searched out, allies turn treacherous, wisdom fails, and mighty men cannot preserve the mountain of Esau. The charge at the center is “violence against thy brother Jacob,” and the book traces Edom’s conduct from watching Jerusalem’s calamity to rejoicing, plundering, blocking escape, and delivering up survivors. The repeated day of Judah’s distress then widens into the day of the LORD upon all nations, where conduct returns upon the doer. Zion receives deliverance and possession, scattered captives are included in restoration, and the final declaration keeps the ending from becoming merely a national reversal: “the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.”
