I cried to God, and through the night my hand Reached out without relief or rest. My soul refused the comfort set before it; I remembered God and still was overwhelmed. Will the Lord reject forever? Has His mercy ceased to flow? Has His promise failed through generations? Has compassion closed its door? Then I said, "This grief has made me wounded, But I will remember years of Your right hand." I will speak of wonders from the ages, Meditate on all Your works again. The waters saw You, God, and shook before You. Thunder rolled and lightning crossed the sky. Your path went through the sea without a footprint; Through Moses and Aaron You led Your flock.

About the passage

Psalms 77: A path through water leaves no footprints

Psalm 77 spends a sleepless night refusing cheap comfort. The speaker cries to God, remembers God, and is initially more troubled by the memory, not less. Former songs only deepen the contrast with a present in which the soul refuses consolation and questions whether favor, mercy, promise, and grace have disappeared for good. The turning point is not a reported change in circumstances. It is a deliberate change in the evidence being considered. The speaker moves from circling his own condition to meditating on God's works and Israel's redemption. The remembered exodus then erupts in storm imagery: waters fear, clouds pour, thunder speaks, lightning fills the world, and the earth shakes. Yet the final image is quiet guidance. God's path crossed the sea without leaving recognizable footprints, and the people were led like a flock through Moses and Aaron.
