Nations entered into Your inheritance, Defiled Your temple, laid Jerusalem in heaps. They left Your servants' bodies for the birds, And poured their blood like water through the streets. How long, O Lord? Will anger burn forever? Will Your jealousy consume us like a flame? Pour judgment on the kingdoms that ignore You, On the lands that never call upon Your name. Do not remember former sins against us; Let compassion hurry to our need. We are brought exceedingly low before You; Help us for the glory of Your name. Why should nations ask, "Where is their God now?" Let the prisoner's groaning reach Your throne. Return the taunt of enemies upon them; Preserve those appointed to die. Then we, the sheep of Your pasture, Will praise You through every generation.

About the passage

Psalms 79: The ruined city still speaks of God’s inheritance

Psalm 79 begins with Jerusalem reduced to a public humiliation, but its first instinct is to speak of ownership: the ruined city, defiled temple, dead servants, and saints all belong to God. That language makes the devastation a crisis within a relationship, not merely a military loss. The community confesses former iniquities and asks that sins be purged, so its appeal never depends on pretending innocence. At the same time, confession does not excuse those who have poured out blood and mocked the question, “Where is their God?” The prayer narrows from a ruined city to the sigh of a prisoner and people marked for death, then ends by calling the survivors God’s people and the sheep of his pasture, still promising praise beyond the attempted silencing.
