When Israel departed out of Egypt, Jacob left a people speaking strange. Judah became God's sanctuary; Israel became His domain. The sea saw it and fled. Jordan turned and ran back. Mountains skipped like rams, And little hills like lambs. What troubled you, O sea, that you fled? Why did Jordan turn away? Why did mountains leap like rams, And hills like young sheep? Tremble, earth, before the Lord, Before the God of Jacob, Who turns rock into standing water And flint into a fountain.

About the passage

Psalms 114: The landscape cannot keep still

Psalm 114 condenses departure from Egypt, wilderness provision, and entry into the land until geography itself seems unable to hold still. The sea flees, Jordan turns back, mountains skip, hills leap, and rock becomes water. The Book of Psalms delays the explanation long enough for the landscape’s reaction to speak first. Only after asking what has happened to sea, river, and mountains does the chapter name the presence of the Lord, the God of Jacob. The same presence that removes obstacles also creates provision from what looks least promising. The poem therefore moves from escape to sustenance, from waters making way to stone giving water. Creation responds not because the terrain has suddenly become whimsical, but because a greater presence has entered the scene.
