About the passage
Psalms 125: The surrounding mountains become a promise of protection
Psalm 125 takes the geography of Zion and Jerusalem and turns it into a language of stability and surrounding care. Those who trust in the LORD are compared with Zion, while the LORD is compared with the mountains around the city. The Book of Psalms then adds an important qualification to the picture of security: wicked rule must not become permanent over the righteous inheritance because prolonged oppression can push even the righteous toward wrongdoing. The concern is moral as well as territorial. The closing prayer moves inward from external rule to uprightness of heart and separates those who remain true from those who turn into crooked ways. Peace upon Israel therefore comes after a distinction, not after pretending all paths are equal. The desired security is a people preserved both from domination outside and corruption within.
