About the passage
Psalms 128: The household table opens toward the peace of Israel
Psalm 128 begins with one person fearing the LORD and walking in his ways, then steadily enlarges the picture until the horizon includes Zion, Jerusalem, grandchildren, and peace upon Israel. The Book of Psalms makes blessing tangible through work, food, marriage, children, and a table. The laboring person eats the fruit of his own hands, while wife and children are pictured through vine and olive growth. Yet the household never becomes a sealed private world. The blessing is said to come from Zion, and the person is to see the good of Jerusalem. Future generations finally open into the peace of the whole people. The chapter’s movement is therefore outward. Domestic flourishing matters, but it belongs within a communal life whose health cannot stop at the edge of one property or one family’s table.
