Praise the Lord, everything in me. As long as I have breath, I am going to sing. Do not lean your weight on princes, or on any human help; it cannot carry you. The breath goes, and the body goes back to the ground; that same day all the planning stops. Whoever has Jacob's God for help is well off, whose hope is set on the Lord. He made the sky, the ground and the sea, and He keeps faith without running out. He gets justice for the crushed and puts bread into hungry hands. He lets prisoners out, opens eyes that were closed, lifts the bent upright, and loves the just. He keeps the stranger, the widow and the orphan, and turns the road of the wicked back on itself. The Lord holds His throne without end, your God, Zion, generation after generation.

About the passage

Psalms 146: The breath that ends and the faithfulness that does not

Psalm 146 measures human power by breath. The singer resolves to praise for as long as he lives, then warns against placing ultimate trust in princes because death ends both their breathing and their plans. The contrast is not with a vague spiritual force, but with the God of Jacob, maker of heaven, earth, and sea, who keeps truth for ever. Creation establishes the range of his power, while justice, food, release, sight, support, and protection show how that power is exercised. The psalm repeatedly turns toward people who lack ordinary security: the oppressed, hungry, prisoners, blind, bowed down, strangers, fatherless, and widows. Its final contrast places the disrupted way of the wicked beside a reign that continues through all generations.
