Praise the Lord; it is good to sing, Pleasant praise is beautiful. He rebuilds Jerusalem And gathers Israel's scattered ones. He heals the brokenhearted, Binding every wound. He counts the stars and calls each one by name; Great in power, His understanding has no limit. He lifts meek ones and casts wickedness down. He covers heaven with clouds, Prepares rain, makes grass grow, And gives young ravens food. He delights not in horses or human strength, But in those who fear and hope in mercy. He sends His word, the snow and frost, Then melts the ice and makes waters flow. He has shown His statutes to Jacob. Praise the Lord.

About the passage

Psalms 147: The one who numbers stars binds broken hearts

Psalm 147 keeps changing scale without losing its subject. Jerusalem is rebuilt, Israel's outcasts gathered, broken hearts healed, and wounds bound, then the poem looks upward to the one who counts and names the stars. Great power and infinite understanding do not make individual damage insignificant. The psalm next moves through clouds, rain, mountain grass, animals, human strength, city gates, children, borders, wheat, snow, frost, ice, thaw, wind, and flowing water. Again and again, power is described through provision and ordered change rather than admiration for strength itself. The final movement connects the word that governs weather with the word made known to Jacob and Israel, distinguishing universal creation from the particular gift of statutes and judgments while keeping both under the same divine command.
