O Wretched Man That I Am
Romans · darkwave chamber art-pop
[Law and Bond]
The law has dominion while a person lives,
Death breaks the claim that the former bond gives.
Joined to the risen, another fruit grows,
Service in newness the Spirit now knows.
[Verse I]
Is the law sin? God forbid, it revealed
The covetous motion the heart had concealed.
The commandment was holy, righteous, and good,
Yet sin took occasion where warning had stood.
[Refrain]
What I would do, I do not,
What I hate, that rises again.
The will is present, the strength is not,
A war is awake in the inward man.
[Verse II]
The good that is wanted remains incomplete,
The evil refused still returns to the street.
I delight in God's law in the inward place,
But another law wars and takes captive the frame.
[Chorus]
O wretched man that I am,
Who shall deliver from this body of death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ,
The answer has entered the divided breath.
O wretched man that I am,
The cry is not final, deliverance is named.
[Bridge]
The law was not darkness, the command was not blame,
It showed sin as sinful and stripped off its name.
No self-made resolve can complete what is right,
The captive must look beyond self for the light.
[Final Chorus]
O wretched man that I am,
Who shall deliver from this body of death?
Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ,
The war has an answer beyond human strength.
[Outro]
The chapter ends with conflict,
But not without a Deliverer.
