Eli, from his figure sheet.

The figure sheets

There are 310 figure sheets: 167 people, 68 places and 75 objects. Each one gathers the passages where its subject appears and says what the text does with them, and each is written in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Filipino. None goes up in fewer than four.

They are meant to have some grit. Eli’s sheet opens with a line that sums him up: “Judged Israel for forty years, mistook a praying woman for a drunk, and could not restrain his own sons.” Every clause of that is in the Book of 1 Samuel, and none of it is softened.

The deep dives

Every chapter of the Bible has a deep dive, 1,189 chapters across all 66 books. Each opens with a summary of the chapter and then walks through it section by section, 5,322 sections in all, each with its own summary and a longer study. In English that comes to about two million words. Spanish, Portuguese and Filipino carry every one of those sections.

A second voice

Beside the study, 1,326 sections carry Reflections from an Elder. It is not part of the study, and it says so: an older man who has lived with these words, saying plainly what the passage is like to carry. On the first chapter of Ruth he says Elimelech “went for bread, found bread, and left three graves behind him”.

The reflections are in all four languages too, and each quotes the reader’s own Bible. Where that Bible lacks the word a reflection turns on, the remark moves onto the word the reader actually sees.
