1 John

1 John opens with “That Which We Have Handled” and carries its history toward “That Ye May Know.” It begins with hands and eyes rather than with doctrine: that which we have heard, which we have seen, which our hands have handled, of the Word of life. Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world, and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

    1 John 1–2

    That Which We Have Handled

It begins with hands and eyes rather than with doctrine: that which we have heard, which we have seen, which our hands have handled, of the Word of life. God is light. If we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and if we confess he is faithful and just to forgive. Then the tests begin, and they run right through the letter: he that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk.

    1 John 3

    Behold What Manner of Love

Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God. Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be. Then the plainest definition of love in the New Testament, and it is not a feeling: hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us. Let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

    God Is Love

Try the spirits, because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Then the centre of the letter: God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God. We love him because he first loved us. And the sentence that shuts the door on every pious evasion: if a man say I love God and hateth his brother, he is a liar, for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen.

    That Ye May Know

Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world, and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. The purpose of the whole letter is finally stated outright: these things have I written unto you that ye may know that ye have eternal life. Not hope, not feel. Know. And the confidence that if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us. Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
