2 Peter

2 Peter opens with “Add to Your Faith” and carries its history toward “Grow in Grace.” Everything needed for life and godliness has already been given, so add to your faith virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity, and you shall never fall. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night.

    Add to Your Faith

Everything needed for life and godliness has already been given, so add to your faith virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity, and you shall never fall. He knows he is about to die and says so plainly. Then his credentials: we have not followed cunningly devised fables, we were eyewitnesses on the holy mount, and we have a more sure word of prophecy, which came not by the will of man.

    2 Peter 2

    False Teachers Among You

A furious chapter. They bring in damnable heresies privately, and many follow their pernicious ways. Wells without water, clouds carried with a tempest, spots in your feasts. He reaches for examples: angels that sinned, the flood, Sodom, and Balaam, who loved the wages of unrighteousness and was rebuked by a dumb donkey. They promise liberty while being themselves the servants of corruption.

    2 Peter 3:1–9

Where Is the Promise of His Coming

Scoffers will come asking where the promise is, since all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. He answers with two things. They are willingly ignorant of the flood, and one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, but is longsuffering, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

    2 Peter 3:10–18

    Grow in Grace

The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be. We look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. He mentions Paul’s letters and admits there are things in them hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable twist as they do the other scriptures. Grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord.
