1 Thessalonians

1 Thessalonians opens with “Ye Turned to God from Idols” and carries its history toward “Children of the Day.” The earliest letter he wrote, to a church that was only weeks old when he was run out of town. The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night, but you are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

    1 Thessalonians 1–2

Ye Turned to God from Idols

The earliest letter he wrote, to a church that was only weeks old when he was run out of town. He remembers their work of faith and labour of love, and that they became an example to everyone in Greece. Then he answers whatever was said about him after he left: he did not come with flattering words or a cloak of covetousness, but was gentle among them, as a nurse cherisheth her children.

    Timothy Brought Good Tidings

He could not bear it any longer and sent Timothy back to check on them, because he was genuinely afraid the pressure had broken them. Timothy comes back with good news, and Paul’s relief is completely unguarded: now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord. What thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes.

    Study to Be Quiet

Practical holiness, and then a strangely modest ambition: that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without. Then the passage they had written to ask about, the believers who died before he came back. They are not lost. The dead in Christ shall rise first, and the rest shall be caught up together with them.

    Children of the Day

The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night, but you are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Then the short commands fired off one after another: warn the unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men, rejoice evermore, pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks, quench not the Spirit, prove all things, hold fast that which is good.
