Marry a Woman Who Will Leave You (Hosea 1–3). A prophet is told to marry a promiscuous woman and to name their children Jezreel, Not Pitied and Not My People, so the nation has to say the words out loud every time it calls them in for supper. Later he is sent to buy her back off the block for fifteen shekels and a load of barley, and told to love her the way the LORD loves Israel.
Take with You Words (Hosea 12–14). Jacob wrestled and wept and came away with a new name, and his descendants have kept the wrestling and dropped the weeping. Merchant scales weighted for fraud, idols made to order, and a birth that stalls at the moment the child should come. It ends with the gentlest instruction in the prophets: take with you words, and turn. God answers with dew, lilies, roots and a green fir tree.
