Daniel 1–3
Teenagers taken to Babylon are given new names, a new language and the king’s food, and they ask for vegetables and water instead. Nebuchadnezzar demands that somebody tell him both the dream and its meaning, and Daniel describes a statue of gold, silver, bronze and iron struck by a stone cut without hands. Then three of them refuse to bow and say their God can rescue them, but if he does not, they still will not bow.

Daniel 4–6
Nebuchadnezzar gives his own account: he boasted from the roof about the Babylon he had built, and spent seven years living like an animal until he looked up. His successor drinks from the temple cups at a party, and fingers write four words on the plaster. The city falls that night, and under the new government Daniel keeps praying at his open window and spends a night with the lions.

Four beasts come up out of a churning sea and thrones are set in place, and one like a son of man is brought before the Ancient of Days. A ram and a goat follow, and the man Gabriel is told to make Daniel understand the vision.

Daniel is reading Jeremiah and works out that the seventy years are nearly up, so he prays a prayer that says we, not they, have sinned. The answer comes while he is still speaking, and it measures out seventy weeks over his city.

Daniel 10–12
After three weeks of mourning he sees a man in linen by the river and is told the answer was sent on the first day and was held up on the way. What follows is the most detailed and least decorated prophecy in the Old Testament, kings of the north and the south pushing at each other for generations. It ends with a resurrection, some to everlasting life and some to shame, and an instruction to seal the book and go his way until the end.
