Lyrics · Daniel
Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin
Daniel 5:1-31
[Processional Chant]
Gold cups from Zion crossed Babylon’s floor,
Mene, Mene, the days have been numbered,
The feast praised metal that could not see.
Tekel, the king has been weighed and found light.
[Verse 1]
Then fingers appeared in the light of the lamp,
And music lost measure while knees struck together.
Peres, the kingdom is divided at midnight,
[Bridge]
No purple robe can lengthen the night.
Daniel refused what the answer could buy,
[Chorus]
Mene, Mene, the days have been numbered,
Tekel, the king has been weighed and found light.
Then opened the history Belshazzar denied.
You knew how the proud king before you came down,
[Verse 2]
Yet lifted the vessel and hardened the crown.
Before morning the writing had crossed into fact,
The wall held four words and an empire collapsed.
[Final Chorus]
Mene, Mene, the days have been numbered,
Tekel, the king has been weighed and found light.
You knew how the proud king before you came down,
The wall held four words and an empire collapsed.
