Hosea

Hosea opens with “Marry a Woman Who Will Leave You” and carries its history toward “Take with You Words.” A prophet is told to marry a promiscuous woman and to name their children Jezreel, Not Pitied and Not My People, so the nation has to say the words out loud every time it calls them in for supper. Jacob wrestled and wept and came away with a new name, and his descendants have kept the wrestling and dropped the weeping.

Marry a Woman Who Will Leave You

A prophet is told to marry a promiscuous woman and to name their children Jezreel, Not Pitied and Not My People, so the nation has to say the words out loud every time it calls them in for supper. Later he is sent to buy her back off the block for fifteen shekels and a load of barley, and told to love her the way the LORD loves Israel.

    Hosea 4–7

No Truth, nor Mercy, nor Knowledge

The indictment starts with the priests: my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge, and you are the ones who took the knowledge away. Swearing, lying, killing and stealing break out, and the answer offered is a religion of returning without repenting. Your goodness is like the morning cloud and the early dew that goes away. Ephraim is a cake not turned, and grey hairs are on him and he does not know it.

    Take with You Words

Jacob wrestled and wept and came away with a new name, and his descendants have kept the wrestling and dropped the weeping. Merchant scales weighted for fraud, idols made to order, and a birth that stalls at the moment the child should come. It ends with the gentlest instruction in the prophets: take with you words, and turn. God answers with dew, lilies, roots and a green fir tree.
