Joel

Joel opens with “What the Locusts Left” and carries its history toward “The Valley of Decision.” Four waves of locusts have stripped the country to bare wood, and the prophet makes every group look at it in turn: the drunkards with no wine, the farmers ashamed of their fields, the priests with nothing left to offer. The nations are summoned down to a valley to answer for selling children to pay for wine and carrying the temple silver into their own houses.

    Joel 1

    What the Locusts Left

Four waves of locusts have stripped the country to bare wood, and the prophet makes every group look at it in turn: the drunkards with no wine, the farmers ashamed of their fields, the priests with nothing left to offer. Even the animals groan because the pastures are burnt. Tell your children about this, he says, and have them tell theirs.

    Blow the Trumpet in Zion

The locusts become an army that climbs walls and runs along rooftops, and the day of the LORD comes on behind them, dark and thick on the mountains. Then the command that turns the book over: rend your heart and not your garments. Call a fast, gather everyone, the old men and the nursing infants and the bride out of her room, and let the priests weep between the porch and the altar.

    I Will Restore the Years

God answers. The rain comes back, the threshing floors fill with wheat, and the promise made is a strange one and exactly the one needed: I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. Then the Spirit is poured out on all flesh, on sons and daughters, old men and servants, and whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered.

    The Valley of Decision

The nations are summoned down to a valley to answer for selling children to pay for wine and carrying the temple silver into their own houses. Beat your plowshares into swords, which is Isaiah’s line run backwards, and put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. It ends with the mountains dripping new wine and a fountain coming out of the house of the LORD.
