Amos

Amos opens with “For Three Transgressions, and for Four” and carries its history toward “A Basket of Summer Fruit.” A shepherd from Tekoa works his way round the map, naming the crimes of Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab, and every listener would have nodded along at each one. A basket of ripe fruit means the end is ripe.

    Amos 1–2

For Three Transgressions, and for Four

A shepherd from Tekoa works his way round the map, naming the crimes of Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon and Moab, and every listener would have nodded along at each one. Then Judah. Then Israel, and the crimes turn out not to be foreign atrocities but domestic ones: they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes.

    Amos 3–5

    Come to Bethel and Transgress

Can two walk together except they be agreed. The judgment falls on houses of ivory, on the women he calls the cows of Bashan who tell their husbands to bring drinks, and on a religion with excellent attendance. I hate, I despise your feast days. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

    Amos 6–7

Woe to Them That Are at Ease in Zion

Beds of ivory, lambs out of the flock, wine drunk by the bowl, instruments invented for the fun of it like David, and not one of them grieved for the ruin of Joseph. Then three visions: locusts, fire, and a plumbline held up against a wall. The priest of Bethel tells him to go and prophesy somewhere else for a living, and Amos answers that he is no prophet, only a herdsman and a gatherer of sycamore fruit.

    Amos 8–9

    A Basket of Summer Fruit

A basket of ripe fruit means the end is ripe. He describes merchants impatient for the Sabbath to be over so they can go back to short measures and heavy weights and selling the sweepings of the wheat, and promises a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. The last vision leaves nowhere to hide, and then in the closing verses the fallen tent of David is raised up, and the plowman overtakes the reaper.
