    Obadiah 1–9

Though Thou Exalt Thyself as the Eagle

The shortest book in the Old Testament is one message to one small nation. Edom lives in the clefts of the rock, high up, and says in its heart who shall bring me down. Thieves would leave something behind, and grape gatherers would leave gleanings, but nothing here will be left. The wise men of Teman will be no help, and the allies who eat at Edom’s table are the ones setting the trap.

    Obadiah 10–14

    Thou Shouldest Not Have Looked

The charge is precise, and it is about one particular day. On the day strangers carried Jerusalem away you stood on the other side. You looked on, you rejoiced, you spoke proudly, you came into the gate and laid hands on the goods, and you stood at the crossroads to cut off the ones who got out. The crime is watching a brother’s disaster and helping it along.

    Obadiah 15–18

As Thou Hast Done, It Shall Be Done unto Thee

The day of the LORD is near upon all the nations, and the rule announced is the one Edom has been using: what you dealt out comes back on your own head. As you drank on my holy mountain, so shall all the nations drink. The house of Jacob shall be fire and the house of Esau stubble, and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau.

The Kingdom Shall Be the LORD’s

The last verses are a map. The exiles come back and spread out in every direction, south into the mountain of Esau, west into Philistia, north into Ephraim and Gilead, and the captives of Jerusalem who were carried as far as Sepharad take the cities of the south. Saviours come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the book’s last line settles whose the kingdom is.
